I’m way too busy to back up

I can’t figure out how to do it

My computer is very reliable. It’s never let me down

Doesn’t that cost a lot of money?

All of which are pretty flimsy reasons. Backing up your data can be as simple as burning the files and folder to CD, DVD or copying them to an external harddrive.
Off-site auto backups are the ideal option and take out the risk of property damage for on-site backup storage.

It is easy to see that it does not take long, is simple to do and can cost only a small amount. Should the worst happen and you lose your data what would the cost be as compared to the pittance it would cost you to do regular backups.

Regular backups ensure your most sensitive and essential information is safely stored and can be instantly accessed should your on-site copies be corrupted, lost, stolen or destroyed.

Nothing is certain in computer technology and, every now and then, your system will corrupt or overwrite essential data, if you have not done a recent backup you may be in considerable strife.

It can be the worst thing to happen to a business.
The paralysis of your business when your computer system is non-operational for more than a week or two can result in an enormous amount of damage to your day to day functioning and inflict a wound from which it may never heal.
Five years later just on half of those business so afflicted will have disappeared.

For the individual it can be almost as bad. There are photos, creative writing projects or other similar data.
It could be music you have created or downloaded.
It could be poetry. All told your emotional investment in the data just makes the loss harder to take.

It is not all over but, you do have recourse.
More often than not the data is recoverable with the skilled attention of a specialist.

Century IT Consultants in Perth, Western Australia is one such specialist.
CITC are experts in the field of data recovery and are ready to assist you in regaining your precious personal or business data.

Cash flow, productivity, risk, return … these are all really BIG issues for small businesses, and so when it comes to capital expenditure on office equipment – getting it right is vital.

Ensuring that the equipment is appropriate for the required function is all –important and there are many other practical considerations. It’s all very well buying expensive software or a multifunction printer/photocopier only to find that they’re not compatible with your needs. For a small business, a mistake can be very costly as margins are generally under pressure and resources are limited. And that’s all very well to say – but when management resources are often stretched to the limit, there isn’t always the luxury of time to do all the necessary research and groundwork.

So when it comes to purchasing a new copier, fax machine, printer, scanner etc – these few hints may help. Each business will have its own set of reasons for the purchase of new equipment, but taking the time to go through a structured buying plan in the short-term will save time and money in the long-term.

· Understand what your current and your future requirements for the office equipment are . Do you require colour or monochrome printing? Other considerations include printing volumes, scan and fax needs, print or copier speed (12 – 14 pages per minute is standard on most copiers although more pricey models can go up to speeds of 16 ppm or higher), scan resolutions, duplexing (printing on both sides of the page), collating and paper handling (eg transparencies, multiple paper supply trays, different paper weights and sizes, envelopes etc).

· Do you intend producing quality full-colour documents for marketing, sales and presentation purposes?

· Are you hoping to improve cost-efficiencies by doing printing in-house instead of outsourcing?

· Do you need the new machine to multitask? Some machines call themselves multi functional, but they are only able to perform one task at a time.

· Do you want the device to operate wirelessly and what are your networking requirements?

· The device has to be functional and easy to use. Is it user-friendly, is much training required and how many people will need to be familiar with its operation?

· Volume and speed are also important as you don’t want to compromise productivity by having people standing around waiting for the photocopier to complete lengthy jobs.

· Maintenance requirements (how often will it need to be serviced and can some of the maintenance be done in-house?).

· Does your business require document management functions? Investing in software for the electronic management, capture, storage and organisation of files and data can be a key success driver for a small business.

· Equipment peripherals eg copier cartridges.

Small businesses usually operate out of small premises, often with several people working in quite a confined area which brings into consideration other aspects of office equipment such as noise levels (need minimal disturbance), size, design (does it suit the office decor etc?). The world’s smallest and quietest multifunction laser printer is manufactured by Samsung, with market research indicating that the Samsung CLP-300 series was the best selling colour laser printer in Australia, say Perth copier and document management solutions supplier, Adscopiers.

Technological advances have meant that there can be very little difference in cost between a stand-alone photocopier and a multifunction machine. When it comes to small businesses and office equipment, the right choice can be a key success factor in growing the business.

Calling all Perth builders, renovators, DIY enthusiasts, handymen – and handywomen – here’s some information that could save your life.

You’ve all heard of the risks and dangers of working with asbestos, but you may not know just how dangerous another common household substance can be and that’s lead. Lead exposure can be extremely harmful and can cause long-term health problems.

The most common source of lead dust is from paint in older buildings, so people in the building trade who may be demolishing, renovating or fixing up older buildings can be at real risk. Lead affects all occupants of a house, even pets, with pregnant women and younger children (generally under the age of four) mainly at risk.

Lead paint is prevalent in older homes. Up until the early seventies, lead based paint was common, and although it isn’t generally problematic if it is in good condition, the risks increase when it starts to peel, chip and crack or during building works. As lead dust is found in cavity walls, under the floorboards and in roof attics, problems occur when renovations involve breaking into the ceilings (eg adding skylights or building another storey), demolishing cavity walls etc.

When renovating or building, people are advised not to dry scrape, heat (with a blowtorch etc) or use a sanding machine on lead based paint as that can result in the formation of lead dust. It’s also possible that dust forms when lead-painted surfaces bump together, including old painted furniture. Some hardware stores in some areas do sell DIY testing kits, but when it comes to eliminating the problem, it’s best to call in the professionals and to use hazardous dust machines for lead dust extraction.

Painting over the hazard isn’t going to solve the problem. The problem has to be physically removed ie with a hazardous dust vacuum, so if you’re building, renovating or simply living in an older home, it’s best to call in the experts or make sure you have the proper equipment.

There are special vacuum machines that are designed for heavy duty work, virtually indestructible, lightweight yet sturdy. They are easily maneuverable and have features such as flexible plastic hoses suitable for use in confined spaces, such as roofs.

The growing awareness of the risks of lead dust has led to increased demand for hazardous dust machines for lead, a Perth supplier claims – plus the machines are also used in a variety of other cleaning applications such as the building industry, pharmaceutical and chemical industries and hospitals. And on the subject of hospitals, it’s interesting to note that in Australia, in nearly all of the cases where children had been admitted to hospital for treatment for lead poisoning, the lead had come from dust during home renovations – news that every builder and parent should heed.

And if you’re taking notes while you’re reading this …and you suddenly realise that you’re chewing on your LEAD pencil – relax! There is no lead in ‘lead’ pencils – the black stuff is graphite and they’re totally safe. But while your pencil is safe, your building site or old home may not be – so it’s wise to do a proper hazardous dust clean up to ensure everyone is out of harm’s way.

The ugly nature of sexual harassment is explored in the 2005 film ‘North Country’. The film is based on the story of Lois Jenson, a young woman who, after leaving her abusive husband, returns to her home town where she gains employment in an ore mine.
In a male dominated industry the work is hard and jobs are scarce. It is not the best of times. With little work available the male workers do not respond well to competition from a woman. Soon Lois becomes the target of verbal and physical abuse that quickly degenerates into inappropriate innuendo and behaviour.
Lois endured this abhorrent treatment for nearly a decade before speaking out. So began the first class-action sexual harassment lawsuit in US history.
The story is a long and sordid affair of mental anguish and legal manoeuvring as Lois seeks justice from a society that would prefer to just look the other way.
That was thirty years ago but it is truly amazing just how pervasive workplace sexual harassment is, even today.
Even in my sleepy old city of Perth you cannot help but witness acts of sexual harassment almost every day. There is a tendency, both in the case of the abuser and the abused, to laugh it off as harmless fun or a joke taken to far, and maybe that is true, once, but if it happens repeatedly it can easily lead to prolonged detrimental effects.
With anxiety and depression common in victims sexual harassment also appears to create far reaching trust issues. The results can also be physical in nature with headaches and insomnia being common.
Workplace sexual harassment is not acceptable and the only way to get that message through to society is to investigate it and to have those responsible held accountable for their actions. If you see someone being victimised in this way report it, allow the professionals to investigate and lay charges where necessary. A victim may lack the confidence to stand up against sexual harassment, a little assistance from conscientious investigators can go a long way to help.
